Make Money Baking From Home – Is It Possible? Find Out How I Legally Make Money Baking at Home

If you have always wanted to make money baking for other people, I’m here to tell you to forget about it! Well, let me clarify that, if that is what you want to do, you had better be one tough cookie. However, tough cookies might not be such a good description if you are wanting to make money baking! At this point, you probably are thinking that I am a little half-baked myself.

Seriously, I am not writing this to be a dream killer, I just want to help you make your dream real, and more importantly I want to help you avoid the pitfalls I encountered when I started my home-based corporate catering company.

This is a pretty long story, and we will have to spend a bit of time together to get through this, so maybe I should introduce myself, and we can get to know each other. I am a mom of twelve, (yes they are all ours). I had searched for a lot of years for the answer to successfully working from home. As you can imagine, in that long search, I ran into many scams, and lost more than a few dollars buying into empty promises.

I will give you a little background to help clarify how I finally decided to start my own business. To help raise money for a building expansion project at church, I had started a baking campaign that was wildly successful. I soon had other churches requesting my help. I often heard “you should start a business doing this”. To make a long story short, I finally decided to do just that.It was following that decision and taking some classes, that I started my corporate catering company. I ran that business, primarily from home, for ten years.

I made every mistake in the book and then some. I started out by taking classes on how to start a business. It was okay, but lacking in lots of ways. I thought I had checked the box on education. I was not experienced enough to recognize that lots of the commonly accepted practices in starting a business were not a good fit for our family. For example, it costs money to start just about any kind of business. The common practice is that business is run with OPM (other people’s money). Sadly, we bought into that advice, and it cost us dearly.

One of the realities is that many small businesses fail, and the percentage in the food business is higher than most. There certainly is a lot of debate on the actual percentage of failure, but that is beside the point. The real issue is that no matter what business you decide to start, most of us don’t want to be a statistic. Some of the best advice I can give you on this topic is to dip your toe in the water, start slowly, and build up some savings that you can use to start your business.

If you really want to get started, you could find a licensed kitchen that you can use, and many times, you can actually find one that you can use very inexpensively. I started using the kitchen at our church for FREE. I agreed to make sure that the kitchen was cleaned well, and I was the contact person for the health department when they needed to inspect it. I know others that have an agreement to be the kitchen manager when it is rented out for parties. It really is possible, you may have to barter some time and effort, but having the ability to start for very little investment is so worth it.

After awhile, I really wanted an arrangement that was more convenient. When I used the churches kitchen, I had to take all my supplies in the middle of the night, do my baking, clean up and get home by 7:00 A.M. so my husband could get to work on time. I also had to get the orders delivered. It was for that reason, that we decided to check out adding a licensed commercial kitchen to our home. Remember in the beginning of this article I said you would have to be a tough cookie, well, I said that because dealing with the health department to add the kitchen to our home was a tough battle.

There were permits, zoning issues, compliance requirements. It was a long drawn out process and there were many discussions with city offices. In the end, we were given the permits, and started construction. It was by no means cheap, but when compared to the cost of leases, and lease hold improvements, it was certainly a great choice. Keep in mind that I was not running a retail business, so there was no traffic coming to my home, I delivered all the orders. In addition to that, another concession I made was I did not have delivery trucks coming to my door, I had to pick up all my supplies. Again, those were minor issues in the grand scheme of things.

We finally met all the requirements, and added the commercial kitchen to our home. It was well worth the fight. I have loved having the ability to work at home, doing something I have always enjoyed. In addition to the ability to generate money for our family, I have had the facility that has enabled me to continue to help youth groups raise funds for mission trips and other charitable causes.
